Parking Information

A Union College campus map showing some of the parking areas can be seen by clicking on this Union College link, "Site Map" on the upper right, and then "Maps" from the list that comes up.

The same Union College campus map can be found in the special community information pages of three current editions of the various Lincoln telephone books.

Union College, a private Christian college, in Lincoln at 3800 So. 48th St., does a tremendous community service for the sake of family genealogy and history and specifically for The Lincoln-Lancaster NE County Genealogical Society. With the utmost generosity, it provides LLCGS with a "home", and has done so for more than twenty years. Firstly, it provides a large monthly meeting space, free of charge, for the Society and its community guests in the lower level amphitheater of the E. N. Dick Administration Bldg. Secondly, it provides free housing of our extensive LLCGS Library collection inside its own Library in the Don Love Bldg.

And as of January 2005, UC has been providing a great free meeting space for our newly-formed afternoon genealogy discussion group, in the beautiful student dining room of their new Ortner Center. The special campus bakery and a drink bar are just around the corner from the dining room! LLCGS is and will be ever grateful to Union College, not only for giving us this wonderful "home", but also for the great kindness, caring and generosity constantly shown to LLCGS members and guests by the UC staff and students.

Parking Information For LLCGS at Union College

The UC campus is small and does have limited parking -- especially during the school year and whenever there are multiple special activities taking place on the campus. However, from any parking space, the walk to the Dick Admin. Bldg., the Love Bldg. or the Ortner Center is, at the very most, no more than the distance of about one city block.

When attending any LLCGS monthly meetings and programs, visiting our Library, or attending the monthly afternoon discussion group gathering, parking is available to members and guests in five areas. Any areas not described here are areas we have been asked not to use for parking, and parking in them may result in possible campus parking tickets.

Parking is available to our members and guests in the following areas:

1. The student parking lot on the east side of the campus -- the best entry is off of So. 52nd St. at the intersection of Cooper St. We have been asked to park in the areas either immediately left or right of this driveway, because they are the areas least used by the students. The parking closest to the men's dormitory, Prescott Hall, is reserved for the students.

For attending any monthly evening meetings: from this lot, walk around or right through the Don Love Bldg. (the bldg. with a transparent barrel vault in the roof) which houses the Library, and then across the open square to the Dick Admin. Bldg.'s back/east side.

For visiting our Library: from this parking lot, you might walk around to the front/west entry of the Love Bldg., or just down the small hill next to the tennis courts to the back/east entry of the Love Bldg. The back/east entry is the closest, but the small incline could be more icy in winter weather.

2. The parking lot of the Larson Lifestyle Center (the reddish slanted roofed building behind the Love Bldg.) -- the only entry is off of So. 52nd St. at the intersection of Stockwell St. There are usually some parking spaces available in this campus lot.

For attending any monthly evening meetings: from this lot, walk either around or through the Love Bldg., and across the open square to the Dick Admin. Bldg.'s back/east side.

For visiting our Library: from this lot just walk directly into the back/east side of the Love Bldg., then through the atrium, and up two sets of stairs to the Library entrance on the upper level. A new elevator is being installed for handicap accessibility from the lower level to the Library level entrance.

See handicapped parking for more Library handicapped access information.

3. The parking lot east of the SDA Church -- which is on the corner of 48th and Prescott Sts. From Prescott St. turn south on 49th St. The parking lot we may use is just to the left off of 49th St., directly east of the church. There is also some angle parking available right after the turn onto 49th St., which is usually available. We are asked not to use the church parking lot, which is directly in front of the main doors of the church on the corner.

For attending monthly meetings/programs: from this lot or from the angled 49th St. parking of the church, walk back north and cross Prescott St. Walk up the short, inclined south drive entry onto the campus and walk straight ahead between the Ortner Center on the left and Prescott Hall (the men's dorm) on the right to the back/east side of the Dick Admin. Bldg.

For visiting our Library: from this lot walk onto the campus in the same way, but instead of going straight ahead into the Admin. Bldg., turn to your right at the corner of the Admin. Bldg. and walk across the square to the front/west doors of the Love Bldg. which houses our Library.

4. On the street parking may be available anywhere from 46th to 52nd Sts. and from Bancroft St. on the north to Prescott St. on the south, and beyond. The business district angle parking west of 48th St. on Stockwell or Cooper St. is the most available, however from this area, 48th must be carefully crossed on foot, as it is a very busy street.

For attending any monthly evening meetings: from the area west of 48th St., cross 48th St. very carefully, walk to about the center of the campus along 48th St. -- angle in through the green area around the clock tower, and take the front stairs to enter the Dick Admin. Bldg.'s front/west entry. Use the indoor stairs or elevator down to the lower level amphitheater. Or walk around to the back of the Admin. Bldg. and use the lower lever back down ramp entry way to the amphitheater. The Dick Admin. Bldg. is the center most bldg. of the campus facing 48th St. and is directly behind the clock tower.

For visiting our Library: follow the same walking instructions, except either walk around or through the Dick Admin. Bldg., across the open square and into the front/west doors of the Love Bldg, which houses our Library.

5. Loop parking south off of Bancroft St. at 49th St. -- there are only six visitor parking slots in this loop -- two are parallel slots and the others are straight angle slots. There is a limit of two hour parking in these visitor slots. This is the closest parking area to both the Dick Admin. Bldg. (our meetings/programs) and the Love (Library) Bldg. (our Library) and is recommended for members and guests with more limited walking ability. These slots are also used by other visitors, especially those to the women's dorm, Rees Hall, which is located just west/right of this loop, so they are not always available just to our Society members and guests.

Not available: the south loop parking, which is only accessed by the campus entry drive off of Prescott St. is not available parking for our use, with the exception of the one handicapped slot. This loop is short term parking for visitors to the men's dorm or the Ortner Center, etc. The new straight angled parking slots just north off of this loop are reserved parking for guests staying at the Ortner Center for conferences etc., and with special parking Ortner Center parking permits only. Parking in this area could easily result in a parking ticket.

Handicapped parking and access: there is one angle handicapped parking slot just east of the Ortner Center in the south loop parking area and two more slots on the east/back side of the Love Bldg., which houses our Library. All of them require a handicapped permit. The back/east lower level entry into the Dick Admin. Bldg. has a concrete ramp. The Love Bldg. which houses our Library, is installing a new elevator. Once the elevator installation is completed, any stairs to enter the Library can be avoided by entering the Love. Bldg. using the front/west doors and taking the elevator to the upper Library level. There are also special handicapped access doors on the back/east side of the Love Bldg. with a door bell, just south of the stairs back/east entry. If you would like to call ahead to verify handicapped access directions and entry, call 486-2514.

General parking permission: LLCGS members and guests have a general permission to park on the campus for our regular second Tues. night of each month, which means that the campus security has been notified of the dates for each of these meetings and does not issue parking tickets for the general time period of our meetings/programs. If any member or visitor inadvertently receives a parking ticket on these meeting nights, just turn it over to or send it in to the Membership Chair.

See our membership directory for the address or call 483-1561 or e-mail
lkohles@alltel.net for the mailing address.

When parking to visit our Library, at times other than the nights of our monthly meetings/programs, you can park in any of the same allowed parking areas described above. However, if you are a regular user of our library, consider requesting a parking permit (described below), to ensure that you do not receive any parking tickets. If you receive a parking ticket for parking longer than the two hour limit in any of the visitor slots in the north loop or for parking in the restricted south loop parking areas, the Membership Chair cannot help you with those tickets.

Parking permits -- a general visitor parking permit card for your car dashboard is available to any member or long-term guest from the Membership Chair, if you would like to have one. In particular, those of you who are a regular library user, library volunteer or afternoon discussion group participant may want to obtain one of these parking permits. Call 483-1561 or e-mail lkohles@alltel.net for one of these parking permits.

Dick Admin. Bldg. Amphitheater: To find the amphitheater inside the Admin. Bldg. from the back/east side of the Admin. Bldg., use either the down ramp to the lower level back door. The amphitheater is to the right of this double entry. The outside back/east stairs may also be taken to enter through the upper single back door entry. From there take either the stairs or the elevator (to the right) down to the lower level. To find the amphitheater from the front/west entry into the Admin. Bldg., take the stairs or elevator, found around to the left of the front doors, down to the lower level. The amphitheater is to the left of the stairs and elevator. Rest rooms are adjacent to the amphitheater.

Our Library Collections: Our LLCGS Library collections are located to the right of the upper level UC College Library entry door in the Love Bldg. Any student librarian or main staff person behind the desk next to the entry can direct you, if necessary. Currently there are two separate collections which make up our Library. There is a user sign-in book on top of our vertical file. All guests are asked to please sign in those surnames and locations being researched on that visit. Regular library users may sign in with just name and date, once all research information has been entered at some previous time. Our Society needs user information to know users areas of interest for new acquisitions and also to provide information about library usage when needed. For a short tour of all that is available, for any physical help accessing material on the higher or lower shelves, or for any help in locating any material in our collections, call 483-1561 or contact lkohles@alltel.net anytime.

Afternoon Discussion Group parking: This group meets on the south end of the dining room in the campus's Ortner Center. The Ortner Center is the building just south of the Admin. Building and west of the south loop drive entry from Prescott St. onto the campus. The closest parking for the afternoon discussion group is the parking lot and the 49th St. angle parking just east of the SDA Church, or parking on Prescott St. between 47th and 49th Sts., or the campus north loop visitor parking off of Bancroft St. at 49th, just to the north of the open square.

Security: UC is a very safe campus and has a good campus security team in place. They wear shirts and jackets indicating they are security team members and often can be seen riding small carts around the campus, especially after dark. They do patrol the entire campus and all the parking areas on campus. They even offer rides on the cart to your vehicle, whenever they can. However, the parking lot east of the SDA Church off of 49th St. and any on the street parking around the campus is not patrolled by campus security.

Member Escorts After Meetings/Programs: During much of the year, departure times from meetings/programs occur after dark. If any member or guest would like to have a member volunteer/s or campus security escort them to their car before or after a meeting/program, that person should notify the Membership Chair before the meeting (483-1561) or at the sign-in table, upon arrival. There are any number of member couples also available to escort single members and guests from and back to their cars before and after the meetings.

Rides Available: For those members who are not able to or do not want to drive alone at night, particularly women, rides to and from meetings with other members, who live in the same part of town, may be available. Rides may also be available for library visits or the afternoon discussion group gatherings. Call 483-1561 or contact lkohles@alltel.net for help in finding a ride.
